The first pace car is a Corvette Z06 E85 concept. It runs on E85 ethanol fuel which manufacturers are working on standardizing into the production models. It is mainly seen as an alternative to a dependence on foreign oil, because, at this point, at least, the fuel mileage suffers with ethanol. Many remember the famous Vette Jay Leno had built by Pratt & Miller. The E85 is mechanically identical to a stock Z06 except for the fuel system modifications and controllers needed to run the alternate fuel. Besides that, only the lights and safety equipment required on the track, and a Green color-shifting paint differentiate the concept from a factory Z06.

Next in line is the Concept and production model pictured together. One represents Chevrolet's focus on fuel solutions, while the other marks 30 years of the Corvette pace car heritage. The first Corvette Indy 500 pace car (safety car) lapped the track back in 1978. GM made 6,502 pace cars in that year. The 2008 will only total 500 units.

The consumer version of the commemorative Indy 500 Pace Car is black-and-silver, with a two-tone titanium-colored interior, and of course all the added ornamentation, including an Emerson Fittipaldi hand-signed and numbered autograph on the interior.

It is a C6 LS3 available as either a hard-top (coupe), or convertible. Both ship with the 3LT option package, Z51 performance package (which will make .98g on the skid pad), and dual-mode exhaust.

This year's pace car marks the unprecedented 10th time a particular model has been the official pace car of the Indianapolis 500, and that car, of course is the Corvette. If you include the other Chevrolet makes that paced the Indy 500, the total goes up to 18 times.
