First of all, these articles are moving towards being about today's Corvette, or what one can purchase, or modify on the present day car (C6).

Leading on up to that major focus (the modern Corvette) for this series though, we have ran through a quick history leading up to what we have today with the Corvette, and now this post will take a quick look at what tomorrow may bring.

We don't want to get bogged down in speculation, and/or arguments about what might be, so this will be the only speculative article in this series, outside of the possibility of future discussions on a part or parts that are ready for production. If we find that something is rock solid in reference to the new C7 model it will definitely come up in a future article.

All the images here are probably fantasy as much as fact, but a basic outline of the vehicle seems to be common.

Many sources agree that the C7 might become available in 2012 as the 2013 model. There was also much speculation that this new model might be a mid-engine, but GM now seems to state that they consider the mid-engine layout for every new model, and that this new Corvette is going to stick with the front engine layout.

What is certain though is that, as always, the new C7 Corvette will strive to be meaner in every performance category than what we have now. Another near certainty is the new corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard law that will require fleets to beat 35 mpg from 2020 onward. This does not mean the Corvette itself will be getting 35 mpg (probably more like 30), but it will definitely have to top the 18-19 (combined) of today's C6. The overall size will probably be clipped, and high tech lightweight materials added wherever possible. Performance itself can be increased, on the new model, simply by keeping or bettering the horsepower to weight ratios.

Undoubtedly the V8 will remain because that is just the way most American hot rods are built. In many instances, when the American sports car tries to emulate a European or Japanese counterpart, too closely, they are doomed to failure. They are just not built the same in the USA, and most people do not expect them to be. All manufacturers have their individual appeal.
The next generation Corvette will likely be pruned down in weight, and possibly in cubic inches. The cylinder shutdown technology is always under development. The new 4.5-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 is also being considered for a high mileage version as it fits in the same hole as the V8 (though it is doubtful that the sports car enthusiasts could digest this setup). There is talk of a twin-turbo V6 too.

In all likelihood the C7 introduction will probably be one of the Corvette introductions that start out with a very expensive vehicle with questionable gains in the things Vette owners love, but as always, things will be worked out by the folks at GM. The Corvette is among the best known and longest running nameplates in sports car history.

There is also speculation that the new C7 will be offered in both a mid-engine and a front mounted engine configuration. Also, that the Vette will become a specialty vehicle and marketed in a different manner. There is even talk of discontinuing the Corvette at that time, but don't forget that some of the best sales years ever for this vehicle were in the 70's when the, then new, emissions regulations, for that time, reduced the power output to that of one of today's econoboxes.

Personally, we would like to see a four wheel drive Corvette. America, and the rest of the world, loves high traction vehicles. The Vette also has the excess horsepower to push the added weight, and the traction gain for acceleration would be fantastic. However, the newer rear mounted transmission might add difficulties with this concept.

On and on it goes.

The next article will go back to dealing with things of interest on today's C6, and will stay in that arena until the next model actually becomes available. So, it will be back to the facts on the modern, or current, vehicle after this article.
