"Aftermarket Cold Air Intake Systems for Corvettes - including Lingenfelter and Vararam. Induction Production Parts improve breathing"

This article continues to explore some of the ways to improve upon the way in which the Corvette breaths, which mainly means exhaust and intake components outside of the engine. In a future article, after we explore most of the separate components, regarding the intake and exhaust, we will poll the actual horsepower gains of various combinations together as part of a total system.

Most of these aftermarket systems are also referred to as cold air intakes, because many of the stock intakes, though highly efficient, take in the hot air from the engine compartment.
There are good reasons for the stock configuration.
- One, it is quieter.
- Two, the stock system is more insulated from taking in unwanted contaminants, such as water. There are not any incidents reported, that we know of, but it is a well known fact that is someone is crazy or desperate enough to ford a stream, for example, most aftermarket systems will suck water before the stock unit would.
- Three, many aftermarket systems will require the installer to cut away stock material, such as part of the radiator shroud. In our minds, this is not big a deal, because there would be no real reason to revert back to the stock setup.
Pictured for the Corvette are the "Lingenfelter C6 Corvette High Flow Air Intakes" (available for most models), and the "Vararam Ram Air Systems" Snake Charmer (for the 2005-2008 Z06 and 2008 LS3) chosen because of their overall general popularity and good reputations. There are many other very reputable manufacturers, for the Corvette, such as K&N, Hurricane, SLP, Callaway, Halltech, BBK, and the list goes on.

In this article there are not any claims about horsepower gains, because an air intake system by itself would have a negligible effect on actual horsepower, as they are designed to be part of a "link in the chain" regarding engine flow. Also, many of the improvement gains are claimed at above 150 mph, for example, so this is obviously a region most drivers are going to see unless they race, or are within a breath of loosing their license, at best. They do offer measurable improvements all the way around though.
These aftermarket units by themselves do offer a nice embellishment to the sound characteristics of the intake system, for those that appreciate the more aggressive attitudes.

Vararam Intake on Chevrolet Corvette C6 video
What can we say about the Lankhoss vs. LPE video? The Lingenfelter is said to have the cold air intake among other things. The video just gives a good idea of the "total packages" or "sum of the parts" on the quest to fine tune the Vette. Plus, the cars just look mean!
