We talked about the Corvette high flow intakes and the fuel injection and how the Vette breathes, so now we'll get into some systems that will up the power output from these areas.

Nitrous oxide is not generally a method that the average Z06 or new Corvette owner is going to use on their ride, but nitrous exists with a vengeance, so it is included in this series. Generally we discuss power and performance modifications that could reasonably be used on a daily driver and nitrous fits into this as it is a dormant system until triggered by the driver. Though the reason we hesitate is because it is also a system that could vaporize your engine in a blink of an eye.

Also, god help you if you come across an identical car to yours other than the fact that the other car is plumbed up for NOS. If you are racing for pink slips, or the nitrous driver is willing to win at all costs, than you will have your hands full, if you had wanted to win any races. A pro nitro tuner can adjust the N2O power output right up to the point before the engine fails.

Nitrous is stored as a compressed liquefied gas, and is a gas when decompressed and exposed to room temperature. Nitrous oxide is also a major greenhouse gas.

Nitrous is also used in rocket motors, as an aerosol propellant, has been used in medicine, and recreationally as an inhalant to alter ones state (inhaling the gas off whipping cream cans, in balloons, plastic bags, etc..), but here we are talking about the Vette or Chevrolet engine.

Nitrous oxide itself is not flammable, but it reacts inside the engine cylinders to basically lower the temperature of the mix, which allows more oxygen into the equation, which in turn creates a more powerful explosion. The end result, though, is ultimately more heat which is the real reason most Nitro engines fail. It's pretty much used for a quick blast of intense horsepower (about another 50% horsepower variable by dosage) in drag racing. The Luftwaffe aircraft of WWII also used it in a similar manner for their GM 1 system.

You may have seen, on the drag strip, or in the street racer movies, where a stream of gas is emitted right before the takeoff. This is basically when the driver is purging or priming the fuel inlet readying the system for the introduction of nitro.

So, if you are sitting at a red light, ready to show your stuff, and confident of victory, and right before the light turns, you notice what looks like a blast of steam coming off your competitors car, things may have just turned for the worse on your victory plans.

Racers will use either a dry or wet system. They are further known as "Dry", "Wet Single-Point", or "Wet Multi-Point" nitrous systems.

Lastly, nitrous is one of the cheapest (initially) way to gain a massive amount of horsepower.

Here is everything you wanted to know about Nitrous Oxide for use as an automotive performance enhancer.
