Callaway Performance Chevrolet Corvette Model was once a factory high horsepower Supercharged option - Supercharger - Blower - Forced Induction C5 C6

"In 1987, the B2K (B2K Callaway Twin-Turbo) option became available as an official option from the Chevrolet (GM) dealers on C4 Corvettes. Example pictured below.

"The Callaway Corvette was a Regular Production Option (RPO B2K) and the only time in Chevrolet's history a specialist manufacturer was entrusted with a technically advanced high performance RPO. The B2K option was eventually replaced by the ZR1 option, though they coexisted from 1990-1991. The early B2K's produced 345 hp (257 kW) and 450 ft·lbf (610 N·m) of torque. The later B2K's produced 450 hp (336 kW) and 613 ft·lbf (831 N·m) of torque."

It is an impressive feat for an aftermarket "tuners kit" to be assigned as an actual GM option, and a tribute to the salesmanship of the Callaway team. This also speaks volumes on Callaway's mechanical abilities because the GM engineers will scrutinize anything which appears to have been installed by "the factory".

There is everything under the sun available as far as aftermarket modifications and kits which can be added to your new Corvette purchase from any dealer, but these added purchases would not be considered part of the stock vehicle like the B2K.

Adding a supercharger is the preferred method Callaway uses to up the power on the Corvette to around 613 bhp on the base 2007 and earlier 6.0 liter LS2 C6. On this years (2008) new LS3 base 6.2 liter engine power output, with the blower, is a bit less at 580 horsepower, but Callaway says both models will do an 11.1 second quarter mile. Everyone has their own preferences, but around here it is agreed that there is something about the sound of a blower winding up that stirs the soul! That is not even taking into account the full rpm power surge that will be had over the stock motor. Many turbo chargers need to spin up before optimal power is achieved, but the blower (supercharger) is basically driven straight off the crankshaft, so power is available instantly.

Also outstanding is the 3 year/36,000 mile Callaway limited powertrain warranty provided on this build. Visit the Callaway website for specifics.

Very interesting fact:

If a buyer decides to only purchase the SuperCharger package the car might be affordable for an "average" new model Corvette buyer. Note however that Callaway has extensive suspension, brakes, and wheel & tire options, which can really take the price upwards. They also offer a full leather interior, and then some, "DEUTSCHLEDER INTERIOR PACKAGE" that in itself can add $25,000 US to the purchase price for the top tier package.

Reeves Callaway Interview

A large portion of Callaway's power performance packages are for Corvettes at least a year old (disregarding their C16 which is an entire vehicle).

The average SuperCharger, aftermarket header, intake, or any other aftermarket part manufacturer will want to be up to speed on making sure that their products fit and perform as advertised on a new model (or new engine in the case of the LS3). So, those companies will perform a testing period before releasing their goods to the public, which is why it is often hard to find performance parts for the newest automobiles.

Also, Callaway usually doesn't touch the Z06 or any factory "hopped up" versions, and their publicized reasoning on the benefits of their package vs. the Z06 or ZR1 can be found on their website. It may also be that they try to stick with what the Magnacharger blower works best on, and it looks like they have close bonds with the company. It is also worth noting that Chevrolet themselves supercharged the LS3 to make the LS9 powerhouse that resides in the new ZR1 SuperCar. All Callaway public data can be accessed from their homepage.

Also, in regards to the Callaway suspension packages, many agree that the Callaway suspension kit, even if purchased without their engine modifications, is a super improvement on the base model C6. The Callaway C6 catalog is here (follow link).

Also know that Callaway makes the C16 and it is available in Cabrio, Coupe, and Speedster designs. It is an impressive work, but we are not going to cover this vehicle in detail because it is super elite and designer rare (and outside of our normal retail Vette cost vs. modifications costs formula), but information is available from Callaway on the C16. Also see Motor Trend for a detailed review of the C16, or the New York Auto Show for information on the 2007 C16. Finally, this Custom Vette will blister the 0-60 mph runs (info. is available in the previously mentioned articles).

Modernized performance Suspension and Chassis - New Chevrolet Corvette C6 - 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 - base and Z06

"The numbers don't lie, and it's hard to deny, the Chevy Corvette cars are on rails"

First, let it be known that the new Z06 can achieve lateral acceleration of more than the magical 1 g., as can the ZR1, and every other model Corvette with minimal modifications.

All high res pictures open in this window - Corvette C6 Z06 Aluminum Chassis and Suspension pictures - Corvette "American Metal Racing" modern muscle cars by Paul Malessa

Corvette C6 Z06 Aluminum Chassis and Suspension pictures

In this discussion we need to consider how the Z06, ZR1 and the base C6 models compare.

The Z06 and ZR1 have a chassis made mainly of lightweight and durable aluminum vs. the high quality steel used for the base models. The Z06 and ZR1 also have a magnesium cradle that serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components. Magnesium is very strong and light. The ZR1 LS9 (like the LS3 base) sits lower in the frame than the LS7 427 Z06 motor.

So, basically, the ZR1 uses a finely tuned Z06 frame with the addition of some more exotic pieces. When we refer to the Z06 most of the information applies to the ZR1, minus the upgraded parts all around on the ZR1.

Here is a close up of the rear transaxle, or the differential and rear mounted transmission. This setup, like the older V8 Porsche 928 allows for an even front vs. rear weight distribution.

The drive wheel or rear linkage is visible here. The Z06 uses cast suspension nodes vs. the welded pieces on the base models.

Of course let's not forget the entire platform built on the suspension and chassis, which in this case is the Z06.

Lastly is the engine we love that powers the beast, which in this case is the Z06 LS7.

Katech C6 Z06 Chevrolet Corvette Race and Street Packages - Specialists in Parts, Engine, and Full vehicle Chevy Corvette performance kits

Katech Performance is well known in performance circles, and many builders put one of the Katech engines underneath their labels. They have full car packages, crate motors, parts, and services to hop up your Vette to about any degree you desire. They also work with a variety of other GM muscle cars not covered here.

All high res pictures open in this window - Katech LS7 427 Corvette high performance aftermarket crate motor - Corvette "American Metal Racing" modern muscle cars by Zorly aka Paul Malessa

Katech modified LS7 427 Chevrolet Corvette engine pictures

Note: In the Zorly series we normally don't get bogged down discussing pricing. In general we cover modifications that the owner of the new vehicle in question might afford. If the pricing is insane we'll make some kind of comment, but usually steer clear of the exorbitantly priced modifications to the stock vehicles. Katech pricing is competitive with the reputable companies of this type.

As far as the modern Vette goes, the main Katech packages are as follows:

C6 Corvette (4+ packages):

1) Value 427 package
2) Procharger package
3) Magnuson package
4) Custom packages available

For details on the standard C6 packages listed above start by taking a look at their engines, then decide on the other options Katech has available.

C6 Corvette Z06 (3+ packages):

1) Stage 1 Cam - Exhaust - Silver Valve Covers

There is a stage 1 and 1+ on the above build, plus any reasonable options from the other packages can be added (for extra cost of course). This is basically a 575+ horsepower fairly light modification. It carries a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty.

2) Street Attack Z06

The Street Attack package is a 585+ horsepower package with an extensive options list. Many of the options available on the "Street Attack" are aimed not only at the power output, but also the power to weight ratios as there are many lightweight parts available through Katech. This package carries a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty.

3) Katech Track Attack Z06

The Track Attack packages are for sanctioned race use only, and may only be installed on non-registered race cars. These packages start out at 630 horsepower, and are designed to build your car into whatever you feel is desirable for the races you compete in. The options list includes about anything you could dream up that is doable.

C6 Corvette ZR1 (Packages in R&D):

Information on the Upcoming vehicle packages for the ZR1 can be obtained by directly contacting Katech as they are in the labs with these projects as we speak.

Power plant improvements for the ClubSport are up to you. These options include the array of modified LS7 engine packages offered by Katech, or you can stick with the stock Z06 LS7 engine and benefit from the other ClubSport improvements.

Also, all these (other than engine) options, listed above, are also available for almost any car you might have outfitted at Katech. They are not only for the ClubSport package.

Of course Katech can also supply anything you need for earlier model Vette upgrades too, especially the C5.

The Katech warranty is viewable here as a PDF (which needs Adobe Reader or Foxit).
