Who in the hell was Paul Newman? Lance Armstrong flew to the moon? - Corvette American Metal Racing by Zorly aka Paul Malessa

"Paul Newman's life and death referenced with Lance Armstrong, Neil Armstrong, and Louis Armstrong" – A celebration of life along with a few of the strong willed men who grabbed life by the reins.

Paul Newman “ripped” pictures

We try not to jump on the band wagon, but we were talking with a group of high school seniors, mentioned Paul Newman's passing, and realized half of their eyes were glazed over, and came to find out that a large percentage had no idea who he even was. Geez, I mean we know about myspace, Naruto, the WWE, Clay Aiken, Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, and on and on.

Around here we are usually all about taking the new C6 Chevrolet Corvette and the 5th generation Camaro and exploring not only what makes them some of the most wicked muscle cars on the planet, but also what the gearheads do to take them to the edge of their performance potential. It is not a news story that Paul Newman was a gearhead and racer (Sports Car Club of America - SCCA), so he is more than worthy of mention in the American Metal Corvette series. He loved life. He also loved Corvettes.

Everyone has skeletons in their closet of one sort or another, but we don't know that many of his escaped, or how many were even in there any way's. As much as a man can be - Paul Newman was kind and good.

Paul Leonard Newman was born on Jan. 26, 1925, in Cleveland Heights, OH. Newmans obituary states that he died at the age of 83, of lung cancer, on Sept. 27, 2008. He was home in Westport, CT and is survived by his wife, Joanne Woodward, who has also achieved the highest levels of success.

Some of Paul Newmans famous movies as an actor were Hud, Cool Hand Luke, The Color of Money (1987 Oscar Winner), The Towering Inferno, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (co-starring Robert Redford), The Sting, and many others.

His renowned contributions as a humanitarian, mainly through his success with Newman's Own (Westport, CT), totaled well over $200 million US. He donated much, including his time on earth, to charities in the United States and Worldwide.

Paul Newman was not the type of a person who walked around thinking me, me, me. He often thought about you, you and you.

See a full article on his life in Reuters or the New York Times - NYTimes.

So, now that you know a little about Paul Newman (if you did not before) we'll also toss in the fact that Lance Armstrong is not the Neil Armstrong who flew to the moon.

Lance Armstrong is a bicycle racer who has numerous Tour de France titles and has competed as a member of the U.S. Cycling Team in the Summer Olympic Games.

As a humanitarian he founded the "Lance Armstrong Foundation" to help other cancer patients who are like himself; survivors. Ultimately, we all are.

Neil (Alden) Armstrong is best known as the first person to set foot on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 team, and he is not one of the most skilled cyclists in the world, but it is probably a good thing for other bicycle racers that he did not choose to go that route.

Louis Armstrong - Jazz Virtuoso picture opens in this window

Louis Armstrong - Jazz Virtuoso pictures

Lastly know that Louis Armstrong played in the movie Paris Blues (1961) with Paul Newman. He was neither an astronaut or bicycle racer, but instead a virtuoso trumpet player who not only influenced jazz music in a huge way, but also all popular music as a whole. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, and The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame, among many others.

As a humanitarian he was a major financial supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., though he was behind the scenes and did not like mixing politics in to his public presence. Don't we wish many of the other celebrities had this kind of common sense in realizing where their talent actually lies, instead of playing the blind leading the blind role with their public opinions?

Still confused?

Well, Paul Newman knew the Jazz Player Louis Armstrong, who is not Lance Armstrong (who rode bikes), or Neil Armstrong (who walked on the moon). All these men also "grabbed life by the reins" and rarely let go. These people all also had a significant event or events in their lives that involved the American Corvette (though any publicized info on Louis Armstrong and the Corvette is unknown).

Anyhow, we have not gone off the deep end, but instead just wanted to remember Paul Newman's life, in relationship to others who live the "American Dream", in a fun and happy way. This article is about life. The next article will be back to the nuts and bolts of the Modern Chevrolet hot-rods.

This article includes a brief history and summarization of the modern LS Chevrolet engine series in relationship to the General Motors performance vehicles. These include the C6 C5 Corvette, the SS Trailblazer, and the retired 4th and new 5th Gen Camaro. The older Firebirds had these motors too. The Cadillac V series and the Australian Holden performance models also use these engines.  You also might relate to these motors in the Pontiac GTO, pickups, vans, ski boats, or hundreds of other applications, but here we concern ourselves mainly with the modern Corvettes.

The LS V8 GM engine series was preceded by the LT V8 engines.

The modern LS engines are generally made of aluminum for automobiles, and cast iron for the truck versions. The exception to this rule is the performance oriented Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS hot rod SUV complete with an LS3 V8 (not all TrailBlazers have the high output V8 – only the SS).

The 2010 SS Camaro will also use the LS3 with the manual transmissions, and a L99 fuel economy version of the LS3 V8 which is part of the automatic transmissions package.

* The LS3 376 CID (6.2L) V8 became the standard Corvette engine in 2008. It starts out at around 430 horsepower. Holden vehicles (a popular Australian performance vehicle name) also uses the LS3, as does the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac G8 GXP.

* The LS4 325 CID (5.3L) V8 was designed for front wheel drive vehicles. Recent GM performance vehicles that use or used this are the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, Chevrolet Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS, and the Buick LaCrosse Super.

* There is no LS5 in recent production runs, though there was an old school 1970's big block "rat" LS5 motor of the yesteryear original muscle cars days.

* The LS6 is a high output (HO) version of the LS1 and was found in the C5 Z06, and some Cadillac V performance cars. The LS6 is basically a high output version of the LS1 (same engine size 6.0L) with a strengthened block structure too.

* The LS7 engine is found in today's Corvette C6 as the 427 CID(7.0L) V8 found in the Z06. There is also a LS7.R version race motor found in the C6.R race cars. Note that a 1970's big block "rat motor" 454 CID was also tagged as an LS7.

The LS7 and LS9 are hand built by Master GM Mechanics. See video below.

* There is no LS8 in production. There was an old LS8 "Iron Duke" in the 70's. There is also much talk of a 500+ horsepower 6.2L supercharged LS8 HO small block V8 for a new Limited Production Camaro. They will need this to deal with the Shelby Mustang and a few others. This engine is said to already have been fully designed outside of meeting some regulatory standards related to upcoming CAFE standards.

* The LS9 is the 2010 (released in 2009) ZR1 high output (HO) supercharged 376 CID (6.2L) V8. The LS9 was chosen for the ZR1 because of its superior block strength for use with the Roots type supercharger. It is basically a blown and race-hardened version of the durable LS3 found in today's standard Corvette.

GM Performance Parts has an LSX cast iron racing engine available, which is basically a relatively inexpensive and super sturdy block for drag racing type events. See this LSX picture gallery or the one at hotrod.com. Lastly, the LS-X is the only motor in this discussion that is not composed from an aluminum block. It is rock solid cast iron.
